solving the santa cruz mystery

Santa Cruz was one of the nicer towns we have visited in America, what sets it apart is that it has quite a lot of character as a result of the numerous 50's style buildings near the sea front.

great bumper sticker

Santa Cruz's main attraction is the Mystery Spot, it is either as claimed the only spot in the world where gravity does not apply....or very possible a poorly built wonky shed erected on the side of an incredibly steep hill.

the weirdness of the spot in full effect

Ralph volunteered to be part of a demonstration of the power of the Mystery Spot by joining a line up of people of differing heights short to tall on the bench who then swapped ends and were no longer tall to short but appeared all the same height....mysterious.

Santa Cruz beach.  Santa Cruz is a lovely surfy town just south of San Francisco.  It has a famous boardwalk with a rollercoaster built in 1907.

Egret ejects on the beach....that's what he thought of us.

Sadly was the roller coaster was closed for the season - it did look cool though

very creepy sign at the funfair of an ice cube shaving itself

We had been put off camping since the cold weather at Yosemite and managed to get a bargain at a motel in Santa Cruz as its a ghost town in the winter

Cooking spaghetti on the beach to use up the last of our camping food.

Crazy golf Santa Cruz style, it was pirate themed and very elaborate with cannons, lava from a volcano, talking parrot and pirate ghost with Ultraviolet underwater world with glow in the dark turtles.

trippy man

Elkhorn Slough visitor centre, a great display about waders feeding.  Elkhorn Slough is a little oasis in a harsh agricultural landscape next to huge power station.  It is about halfway round Monterey Bay and really oddly looked just like Suffolk.  Its the largest tidal saltmarsh in California outside San Francisco.  We saw Willets, Pelicans, black shouldered kites, meadow lark.

Elkhorn Slough looked a lot like Trimley Marshes, nr Felixstowe

There must be a vortex underneath the Mystery Spot! How else to explain it ??
