Plane stupid

Despite all our best efforts we have failed! We had to take a float plane to the bear trek, although propeller driven planes don't have the issue off radiative forcing they are still not the most sustainable form of travel! Given the amount of travel by plane and helicopter in Alaska we had been pretty lucky to make it this far by boat.

Getting weighed in

Our float plane from Kodiak city to Uyak Bay in the south west of the island - a de havilland Beaver

Almost every town in Alaska has a business offering airbourne glacier or wildlife tours and having been on our trip we can see why, the views of wilderness from above are stunning.

On arrival we had to be piggy backed off the floats to dry land by the pilot!  Reuben (bottom right) oversaw the logistics.

We were greeted by Reuben

Fiona, Alan and Jackie on the way to camp and our first sight of bears.  We went by boat up the bay towards the creek where we were going to be bear viewing and camped up in the brush beside the bay.

First bear signs, quite a big print
