Merida - the home of hammocks

Merida, a transport hub and colonial style town on the Yucatan penninsula is home to what is very possibly the best youth hostel in the world, or at least in the top 32 anyway.  There were hammocks everywhere including over the swimming pool and lush cacti and tropical garden.

Another highlight was chatting to the guy in the English language book shop who was really interesting and had so many recommendations for us we ended up buying too many heavy books!

Grey cracker butterfly

A church with the ropes ready for ringing the bells

A very colourful hammock shop

Hat shopping.  This one was a little too big for our luggage but we did buy three mini guinea pig sized ones.....

The Maya restaurant we went to - had to queue for half an hour as it was mega popular - Any way two ladies sat round that small wooden table all night endlessly making tortillas by hand and toasting them on the pan on the right.
